Meet Morgan, a Student Mentor creating opportunities and enabling better lives through support for students of the MCI Institute, helping them to helping to thrive and succeed in their educational aspirations. MCI Institute is part of the APM Group and specialises in supported online business courses that provide flexibility and accessibility.
We recently spoke to Morgan about her experience working with MCI and the APM Group – let’s hear what she had to say!
Let’s hear a bit about you and career so far…
“I joined APM in late 2020 as Client Services Officer for Workforce Australia in Western Australia, before joining MCI in a similar role in 2021.
I really enjoyed the work and found value in helping people to thrive as they build on their education, and became a Student Mentor in July 2022.
As a Student Mentor, I support our students through their Cert III, Cert IV or Diploma courses. We set goals together to keep them on track and I provide motivation and guidance to help them progress while maintaining a healthy work/life/study balance.
Whether I’m working with students wanting to further their education after finishing school, those looking for a change in career, needing to make their work experience official with a formal qualification or looking build on their current qualifications, it’s been incredibly rewarding so far and I always look forward to meeting new students who are hoping to change their lives through education.
In my role, I’ve also fortunately been able to move from WA, to NSW, and then to Melbourne. In the past, I’d worked in the retail, hospitality and medical industries, which enabled me to build my customer service and people skills – which I’ve found to be transferable across the APM Group and I’ve been given opportunities to continue building upon them able to transfer and build upon them.”
How has APM supported your career?
“My leaders across APM have always been very supportive and encouraging of me when I expressed an interested in exploring other parts of the business. They helped me to make connections which gave me the opportunity to develop a rewarding career pathway and to continue stretching myself as a professional.
I’ve also had ongoing access to learning and development that’s helped me to grow in many areas – both personally, and in my chosen career.”
What do you enjoy about working at APM and your role?
“Each team I’ve worked in has been led by strong, hard working, supportive women and there is fantastic diversity and inclusion right across the business. I’ve also been grateful for the flexibility I’ve had to move across Australia while continuing to work in a role that I love.
Being an important part of my students’ educational journey and supporting them while they grow their knowledge and skills to improve their lives is also incredibly fulfilling.”
Have you made the most of any of the APM Benefits on offer?
“Yes! I’ve used the Employee Assistance Program that provides support to APM team members and their families. It was extremely helpful and easy to access, and was customised to suit my needs.”
Do you have any advice for those interested in joining APM?
“Start by starting! As the saying goes - ‘get your foot in the door’ then a world of opportunity will be open to you to expand, change and grow your career! You will be supported every step of the way by encouraging and supportive team leaders and colleagues who only want to see you thrive!”
Last, but not least, what do you like to do in your spare time?
“I love to travel – I spent a couple of years in the UK - and in my downtime, I love to read, practice yoga and have recently taken up boxing.”
