Empowering our people to foster belonging and inclusiveness

Here at APM, we like to think that every day is Harmony Day though our commitment to honouring diversity and inclusion, belonging and respect for our people that come from many cultures and backgrounds.

We use these days to celebrate the fact that we're all different and each bring unique perspectives and life experiences to our roles. 

This year, in the lead up to Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community, members of APM’s Muslim community came together to create a special presentation and video to inform their peers about Ramadan and honour a moment that means a lot to them.

The initiative was a way to drive inclusiveness and offered tips on how to be considerate of our people, our clients, along with APM Employment Services participants during Ramadan.

Shaheena Khan, APM Employment Services Workforce Australia Services State Manager - Metro NSW and ACT, championed the efforts to create greater awareness of Ramadan:

“We have a number of Muslim employees across my three regions, and we work with high culturally linguistic and Muslim demographic in Sydney, and indeed across Australia. Our presentation was an educational piece to inform those who may not be familiar with Ramadan, its significance or what it involves for those who are practicing.”

Mary Sways, an APM Employment Consultant in Marrickville, NSW was also part of the presentation and said that she feels a positive sense of culture and belonging at APM:

“APM is a workplace where I’ve always been encouraged to practice my beliefs and traditions.”

Coming together like this is an example of the strong team spirit we have at APM (further examples being our First Nations Yarning Circles and recent Chinese New Year and Mardi Gras Pride celebrations).

It’s heartening to see our people wanting to support each other and feel encouraged to become involved in creating a workplace that celebrates the valuable contribution that all cultures bring to our broader community, and where our people can truly belong.
