Graduates given opportunities to thrive

After completing a Psychological Science degree with honours, Amity Langford took on a role at APM Employment Services helping Australians with a disability find employment.

Through on-the-job professional development training, Amity discovered the Provisional Pathways program. Over six years, it leads to becoming a registered psychologist following four years study and two years as a paid intern.

With her strong passion for helping people, Amity saw this an excellent opportunity to continue working closely with individuals who needed support, while remaining on track to becoming a registered psychologist.

Knowing that APM provides many mental health and psychology services across its businesses, Amity spoke with her leader to determine the best way forward.

“With their support, I moved into a role in APM WorkCare, supporting injured workers return to the workplace. With the required supervision, I was able to put into practice what I’d learned at university.”

Exploring all avenues

In early 2022, APM acquired Early Start Australia, a team of therapists who work with children and their families to help provide the best start in life for their clients.

Amity knew that to be a future leader in her line of work, she needed to experience a range of disciplines within the field of psychology. This is what prompted her to take the initiative to ask if there was an opportunity to work with Early Start Australia and learn more about supporting children’s mental health.

“I now work part-time with Early Start and part-time with APM WorkCare. I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to undertake therapy and assessments with a broad range of clients, with varying needs, all contributing to my goal of becoming a registered psychologist.”

Enabling opportunities

Fostering career growth is important to APM and we want our people to succeed and thrive.

We’ve seen the impact that enabling our people to take the next step can have on their career journey.

This ultimately supports our clients, along with psychology graduates on the Provisional Pathways program across the business.

“APM is really supportive of my desire to try out new disciplines and created opportunities in partnership with me” Amity said.

“Being able to learn and experience different areas of psychology while remaining employed within the same business is unique to APM. They were also great in dealing with the admin side of changing roles, so I could focus on doing my job and supporting my clients.”
