How APM encourages belonging and connection

APM is proud to celebrate equity, diversity and inclusion for our team members, customers, and communities around the world.

We love the fact that we are all different and we’ve worked hard to create a place you can belong and feel accepted, where you can bring your true self to work, and are empowered to do your best work.

To support our efforts and provide an important first-hand perspective, our people can get involved in our Employee Communities to actively engage with our people and across the business.

Our Communities focus on disability, LBGTQIA+ and First Nations communities and are led by employee volunteers to drive key actions and initiatives that raise awareness and deliver outcomes that shape our business.

All APMers are invited to join an Employee Community – from those with first-hand experience, to allies and supporters – everyone is welcome!

Here’s a snapshot of the First Nations Community

Community is so important to First Nations peoples and there is a strong desire to embed that within APM and create that sense of belonging. This supports the goal of creating a culturally safe and diverse workforce for our new and current First Nations employees to thrive.

Joel Duckham is our First Nations Engagement Lead and works in APM’s Talent Acquisition Team, focused on leading efforts to attract and retain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees.

Members of the Community come together regularly to talk about their experiences. It’s a culturally safe forum to share ideas and no expectations are put on employees attending the meetings. The aim is to simply talk and hear about what is affecting them in their everyday work lives and issues affecting the communities we work in.

The Community has initiated training for employees on cultural awareness and recently launched “Creating Deadly Leaders” for managers. They’ve also advised on changes to the recruitment and onboarding process to ensure it addresses the needs of our First Nations communities, and is creating a database of First Nations-owned business that can become preferred suppliers to APM.

APM’s Reconciliation Action Plan is currently being reviewed and updated, and the Community is playing an important role in this project.

All of these efforts seek to create a sense of connection and belonging at APM and supports efforts to be an inclusive and culturally respectful business that works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to create positive and lasting employment opportunities.

Our First Nations Community gathers valuable insight into the experiences and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and can help identify and address barriers to their recruitment, retention, and career development.
