Winning on and off the field
Josh is a physio at Lifecare Malvern Sports Medicine, in Victoria. When he’s not working, you’ll find him playing footy and coaching a local team. His role at Lifecare allows him the opportunity and flexibility to stay fully involved in his passion for sport.
“Lifecare provided a lot of flexibility with being able to finish at certain times and still having one day off a week, where I can do other sports coverage and physio for a couple of sports teams. Lifecare has created heaps of opportunity to be able to work with high-level athletes as well as the general population who are quite athletic.”
Working within a network of clinics that’s part of a larger APM group has expanded his horizons, giving him a breadth of experience and learning opportunities.
“You can start in the Mornington Peninsula, move to Elsternwick clinic and then also work at Malvern clinic. So the flexibility has been something that’s helped me not just personally, but professionally as well, to learn from other really qualified practitioners – both with physiotherapists and other occupations like Sports Medicine and podiatry.
To Josh, the ability to learn and grow is so important. It’s how he works best.
“I think asking a question to people who have years and years of experience is always an easy way to skip forward, and learn. It’s an opportunity to be able to learn first-hand and create a lot of immediacy to a lot of experience. A lot of that leadership are allied health professionals as well. The experience from practitioners that have already been in the game for a long time enables us to put what they’ve taught us into our practice a lot more easily and swiftly.”
So, what advice does he give to someone just graduating to start their career?
“If I had my time again, I wouldn’t change much, honestly. I would ask the questions, what it looks like after a year, what the expectations are of me, and what the flexibility is like? It’s whether they can create flexibility for the things you’re passionate about or create an opportunity for you to work in the field that you want to work as well. So, asking those questions and just being inquisitive about it. That’s the best way forward, I would say.”
